2nd Grade Field Trip

I'm so happy I raced to the classroom to turn in my chaperone slip. Lots of other parents wanted to go and love volunteering. I felt the need to go and made sure we showed up to school early....only the first 2 parents got to go. This was such a fun opportunity to be with Ally and her friends from school. We all had a great time....have you ever considered what you'd want to be:
a worm, spider or a fly?

My Brother

He must know I blog! Why is it everytime we take a photo he chooses to make these weird faces as I snap the shot???? I am grateful for my brother, he makes me laugh and brings back good memories of our bond during our teenage years. He has adorable children, I love to see. I love the fact that he gives random calls here and there to check on me and just talk. Earlier this month, he was willing to sacrifice a morning of his time to help me with my living room. Who knew that a brother could give new ideas for your living room arrangement??? We've been here 5 1/2 years and have never had the space work this well.....I'll post pictures once I get the walls painted :-) Thanks Kevin for the time together and the great ideas...I'm amazed at how much better the furniture arrangement with new pillow covers (thanks to mom) and window draperies look. It's making our living space feel new again....so refreshing!

New Adventures in Babysitting

Our newfound joy, helping some little friends! I love these kids and am thrilled for the opportunity to watch little ones throughout the week. We have little Mia 4 days a week, it's such a joy to have a baby in the house again. Our family is enjoying this baby fix and the fact that we still get to have a full nights sleep. Mia is such a sweetheart, she'll give you a smile almost anytime. Mom says most of her weight is in those cheeks....aren't they cute! We couldn't resist a fishy face.

I have 5 year old Ruby (not in the pic...morning only) and her little sister 2 year old Julia (all day) every Thursday. We have fun pulling out all the old toys, which you can see even my girls enjoy playing with when they get home from school.

I love the fact that our family is enjoying this adventure together. No complaints yet and we've been going strong for almost a month and a half. Thanks for the opportunity Catalina and Arica!

Happy Birthday Grandma!

Glad we could be there to celebrate. Hope your day was filled with lots of love and you know how much you are appreciated!

Happy New Year!

We are thankful for the invitations we had to celebrate the New Year. My good friend Arica invited us over for New Years Eve. After an emotional day, it was exactly what our family needed and we had a great time....Thanks Arica and Jason!!!

New Year's morning was also great. We got to see my Grandmother and some extended family members. Grandma provided breakfast for the entire side of the family. It was great to see her and fun visit and play with her during her visit to mom and dads.

Great Grandpa 12-31-10

Grandpa is a great man. Unfortunately, he passed away this morning after suffering several weeks with phenomia. We are grateful he was able to see his 88th birthday, this past Monday, which also happens to be the last day he was able to speak and acknowledge the presence of family members. Jeremy and I feel blessed to have so many good memories of him and with him. We also feel blessed that our daughters have been so fortunate to know their "Great" Grandfather AND are old enough to know and remember that he loves them very much.

This is a portrait Ally and Kaitlyn both received in a card from Great Grandpa last month, the day of Ally's baptism. I had never seen this picture before and do not know when it was taken. You'll find Grandpa being very serious. Yes, he was a serious man, but the man we know is also loving and kind in every way. He loved his beloved "Betty" very much and longed to be with her. He loved his family. You can tell he and Grandma taught the importance of family, for his children have all stayed close through the years and do what they can to support each other. Grandpa taught us work ethic during our visits. Even this past year he kept his homestead running, this included a roof repair and taking care of a large yard and garden.
A memory I'll never forget is him shooting a wild rabbit on his property. Jeremy encouraged the shot (with my disapproval because of my love for them). We did not think he could make it, but he proved us wrong when he got it with one shot and then decided to teach me to eat it and like it.....not just for how cute they were.

I loved the cowboy side of Grandpa. Jeremy and I were introduced to Marty Robbins and Buck Owens through the music we listened to in Grandpa's basement while playing pool. Grandpa always put on the classics and at times would dance with our girls while we played. He was always so sweet with them. Antoher cherished memory is our annual Rodeo at the fair. Jeremy and I attended when we were dating and have taken Grandpa every year of our marriage (2009 being the only exception, because Grandpa was not feeling well). Grandpa loved watching his rodeos on television and we were always thrilled to take him to the local championship each summer. We saw many bulls rides, 12 championships. We will never forget this annual date with Grandpa.
2011 won't be the same without you, Grandpa, but we will hold you there in our hearts. I will imagine you walking through the cattle barns at the fairgrounds holding hands with the girls, as you have done in previous years. That was such a precious sight, from a serious man who had so much love to give to all his family. We are glad you are not suffering any longer and will finally be reunited with your precious Betty. We love you Grandpa!

"Away in a Manger"

Our Savior Jesus Christ, the reason for the season. Away in a Manger will hold a much deeper meaning from this moment on. This was a talk given on 12/12 this year.

I love music! If my 3 brothers were here they would laugh at this comment and think back to our family road trips…..they hated their sister singing her heart out in the back of the mini van and the fact that my parents would not force me to be quiet! However, I’m sure they would also recall the memories we had singing together….we had our family favorites and loved singing at the tops of our voices, especially our favorite Christmas music!

My love for music has grown immensely through the years. When asked to speak about my favorite Christmas hymn….it was actually exciting for me. Though choosing just one would be difficult.

Can you imagine Christmas without music? Preferably our Christmas hymns? In D&C 136:28 it states: “If thou art merry, praise the Lord with singing, with music….” Certainly in my merriest of moods, I sing…though hard to believe, I even catch my husband doing so at times :0) Last week, I was flipping through the hymnbook, trying to figure which was my favorite but also what would be the easiest to talk about…..I was grateful when we opened the meeting with “Away in a Manager”. I knew this was certainly a favorite….though it has never touched me as deeply as it did last Sunday. I know it was the spirit telling me "this was the hymn, but for some reason, my clarification came a couple days later after asking my daughter what her favorite church hymn was, when I realized this was her favorite, that was the clincher.

I did a lot of study, wondering how I could go into great depth for you and possibly learn something new. After hours of reading and study and searching for answers as to what to say….I realized how simple the hymn is and realized the feeling I felt as I sang it.

the first verse reads:

Away in a manger, no crib for his bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head;
The stars in the heavens looked down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.

I recall a feeling of peace and simplicity as I sung this. Even though Mary carried within her the Son of God, He didn’t need some amazing place to stay, he stayed in most humble surroundings and his parents would make the best of their family’s circumstances. I’m sure they felt peace and joy watching their infant son sleep.

I was appreciative of the story which Sister Jones shared at our ward activity last Friday. They certainly made the best of a very difficult situation. It’s wonderful that her children view that particular Christmas as the best ever. They sacrificed the materialism of Christmas and found joy in simplicity. Let me share with you a lesson taught to some sisters by our former Prophets wife Sister Hinckley:

Several years ago, during the Christmas season, President and Sister Hinckley came to BYU for a musical event. Before the program, there was a buffet dinner, and at one point while the men were away from our table, the women began to talk about the frustrations of getting ready for Christmas. Our conversation focused on the fact that everything about the season was becoming a burden for women. We bear the responsibility of selecting gifts, organizing social events, preparing everyone’s favorite foods, and making certain that family, guests, and even the less fortunate have a merry Christmas. We felt overwhelmed if not resentful.

Sister Hinckley listened patiently, and then without the slightest edge of criticism in her voice said, “I Love Christmas. It is the most joyful of all seasons. I love seeing the eyes of little children light up on Christmas morning. I love giving gifts. I love being with my family. We just need to simplify and remember what we are celebrating.”

After she had spoken, something magical happened. Our attitudes shifted, and we began to talk about the birth of our Savior and the spirit of giving. In the years that have passed since those words were spoken, a burden has been lifted for me during the holidays. As I shop, prepare food, and join with friends and family to celebrate the birth of our Savior, her words nurture and calm me. “I love Christmas, “I hear her say, and I let her teach me to relax and enjoy the season.

As we imagine the manger and the hay which Jesus laia his head on, let us remember the peace we need to feel during this special time. Our children need to feel this peace as we keep things simplified and allow the family to find joy.

The second verse of the hymns bring the animals into play and the Saviors reaction to them:

The cattle are lowing, the poor baby wakes;
But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.

It’s was difficult for me to find clarification on this, but a little clarity comes as I read Isaiah 1:3, it states: “The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his masters crib” We are told in the our most current Ensign that “Jehovah’s creatures knew and accepted Him…”. We also know that our Savior accepted His father’s will to be here for each of us. We know that the Savior was “oppressed, and he was afflicted throughout his whole life. In Mosiah 14:7 we read that “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth” Because of his perfect life, he never complained, even as a baby.

As we continue in this 2nd verse and the verse to follow, the hymn begins to touch my heart and becomes more personal, by this time I’ve been able to recognize my testimony of the Saviors birth. I can also sing the following more reverently, as if my own prayer is being offered:

I love thee, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky
And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

I can’t help but picture the love my daughters have for the Savior as I read this. They cherish their wood blocks with the pictures the primary has given them, they adore the nativity sets displayed and play near them often. I think I’ve mentioned before the sweet experience of one of my daughters looking up into the sky a few years ago and viewing the rays of light streaming through the clouds, she knew the heavens were smiling down upon her. I hear the prayers so sweet and innocent and wanting to do all they can to choose the right and be like Jesus. Do we hold onto the desire to have the child-like qualities needed to be like our Savior? In Mosiah 3:19 it states how each of us should “putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint though the atonement of Christ of the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.”

I would like to share with you a story:

One day, as I drive home with my wife and our little one and half year old son, we discussed Sister Mayech and the fact that she walked two hours one way to go to church. We debated whether we should make the sacrifice and leave thirty minutes earlier on Sundays to give her a ride to and from church. We felt good as we finally agreed that we would arrange our time to do this service for her.

How surprised I was, however, when I presented her with our suggestion the next Sunday. She said, Brother, you cannot do this to me. I’m an old lady. How can I ever show the Lord how much I love Him, how much I adore Him, how much I depend on His atoning sacrifice for my salvation, and my desire to serve Him? I’m too old and too ugly and too forgetful to serve as the RS president or ever as a teacher. The greatest joy of my life is on Sunday when I can get up early in the morning, walk to church, and take the sacrament. Yes, it is a long walk and, yes, my legs hurt and back hurts, but every step I rejoice. Every tree and every shrub is my friend. I know every person behind every window. I greet them all with my heart and with my testimony. As I walk, I sing hymns and when I arrive, I’m through the hymnbook and my heart is full of joy and gratitude because my walk is a celebration of my Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. And you want to take this away from me? You can’t do this to me. Let me walk.

In a strange way, this woman taught me more about the gospel of Jesus Christ than I may have learned in Sunday school classes. Her commitment was total. Whenever she spoke, she bore her testimony….Long before I was able to go to the temple, she told me of the urgent need for each member to go to the temple as often as possible. One time, she reported she had been in the temple in Switzerland at least once a month since the temple had opened. That was much more than anyone else in the branch had accomplished. When she could not get anyone to take her to the temple, which was ten or twelve hours away, she somehow saved the money to go by herself by train. Not a month went by that she did not manage to go to the temple.

When I became branch president, one of the most touching experiences of my service was receiving the tithing envelopes from the members. I was deeply touched by the faithfulness and commitment of even the poorest in the branch, Sister Mayech in particular. When I received her tithing, my heart was touched, but then I saw, to my surprise, that she had added a very large amount as a fast offering. It was nearly fifty percent of her tithing. In compassion, I said to her, “Sister Mayech, you don’t have to do that. This is a lot of money for you.” She rebuked me in another outburst of conviction. She stomped her foot and shouted, “Brother Bushche, you are new in the church. You don’t understand yet. This fast offering is for the poor and this is serious. We must not let the poor go hungry.”

“I learned that she did not consider herself poor. I also learned that she refused any help that people offered. I never saw her in any other dress or in any other shoes, and I doubt that she had any. I knew that she lived in a little shack without sanitary installations, but she considered herself rich.”

I believe this story brings us to the final verse of the hymn.

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray.

We need the Lord Jesus. He is with us if we choose for him to be there. Are we committed to follow Him? Do we give the types of gifts to the Savior, like Sister Mayech gives? I’m thankful for a challenge which was given by Elder Neil A Anderson to the youth in last April’s conference. I felt that I needed to take the challenge….to read the book of John. I felt the love of my Savior as I read it. I can imagine the grief His disciples must have felt as Jesus told them that he must go. I’m thankful for the love that Jesus portrayed. Jesus overcame this world, he did this for the comforter to be with us and lead us home.

A quote from President Gordon B Hinckley goes as follows:

Born in a manger, He came to earth under the humblest of circumstances. The Son of the Almighty became the Savior of all mankind. He walked the roads of Palestine working miracles. He healed the sick, He brought sight to the blind, He raised the dead. He blessed the little children and condemned any who should offend them. He left His mark upon the world, which can never be erased nor diminished. Concluding that brief life, was the agony of Gethsemane and the terrible suffering of Golgotha, to be followed by the glory of the Resurrection. No other had ever before done what He did. He rose from the grave, and through His great act of Atonement came salvation for all men. Our eternal lives are in His hands, and our eternal progress lies in obedience to His teachings. Close quote.

I know the Lord is with us in all that we do. I am thankful that He can speak directly to us directly as we open our scriptures and our hearts to the voice of the spirit. Jesus Christ certainly is the light and life of this world, the beginning and the end. I’m thankful to my Heavenly Father for this wonderful gift He has given each of us, His only begotten Son. I pray that as we each do our best to follow our Savior, through each season of our lives, that He will:

Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there.

YEA!!! The Christmas Tree is Up!

We've been sneaking a little bit of Christmas music here and there since the beginning of November. All throughout November the countdown was on: "Mom, when are we putting out Christmas decorations??!!!". I'm glad to say we got them out the day after Thanksgiving. The tree took us 5 hours to put together, all the other decorations we put out the next day. Right now we are having a blast making tons of Christmas gifts and getting into the Christmas spirit. Once all the gifts are finished (almost there) we'll start all the baking we LOVE to do.

The girls did a great job with the tree this year. I sat back while the they put the branches on. Once they were finished, they got their break while I put the lights on. A couple changes this year: the extra red and white glass balls and we changed the twisted ribbon around the tree to bows.

I love the fact that we have ornaments back from when I was a child. I'll never forget how excited my brothers and I were to put our own ornament on the tree (a little pom pom panda bear on top of a block with our initials). Other ornaments I still have: one I made in bluebirds (tin lid, poked with holes to create the image of a bear, backed with bunched fabric) and an ornament my favorite teacher of all times (Mrs Olsen, Greene now) from the first grade made. Lots of good memories that I love sharing with the girls as we decorate. The completion of the tree comes after Daddy arrives home. As a family we top the tree with our star. This is done as we listen to our favorite Christmas tunes.

It's the most WONDERFUL time of the year!!!

Need a good laugh?

These are the cute faces that come to me every morning, making sure teeth are clean and satisfactory.

This is my adorable red head that comes to me each Sunday asking if it's fast Sunday and grateful when it's "SLOW Sunday" cause she'll get treats in her primary class :)

This is also the cutie that often has ants in her pants (never sitting still) and has a story that relates to her actually having ants in her pants...yes the story needs to be recorded. It goes as follows:

This was a beautiful day and a lovely chance to sit in the grass and enjoy waiting for Ally to get off the bus. Mom sat while Kaitlyn danced. It looked like a new monkey dance. New movements with her hips, arms and some jumps here and there. Then the realization came that she was uncomfortable. Kaitlyn started scratching and mentioned that something wasn't right, "my bum is itchy mommy". She had been sitting next to me and I saw that she sat directly on an ants nest and had ants crawling all over her! We had to wait for the bus which luckily had rounded the corner and had two more stops. We started wiping them off the best we could. Once the bus arrived, Kaitlyn and I ran home, leaving Ally behind (yes she was not happy and had no idea what was going on). We were running home, laughing histarically as I'm telling her exactly what's going on: ...."you REALLY have ants in your pants....we'll get them out...let's hurry!" We tell her all the time that she needs to get the ants out of her pants. Luckily, she too, was laughing the whole way. We stripped Kaitlyn down in the drive-way, wiping ants from all the crevises (EEW). Ally was shocked to see a naked sister running to the front door as she arrived at the top of the driveway. We got Kaitlyn all washed up and we now have this funny story of Kaitlyn having ants in her pants the first week of Kindergarden :)

An Escape.....For Mom's Birthday

We picked up the birthday girl, as soon as school got out, and headed for the Coast. We had a fun evening together; dinner, games and a movie. Mom's has great pics of the evening on her blog (birthday treat and fun game). It was fun being able to have simple night of fun in a cozy setting (away from the usual routine). Veterans Day started out beautiful! We all woke up early and were down on the beach by about 8am. We were pleasantly surprised, we could have been without coats! We were all happy as clams to have our little get-a-way....and celebrate the fact that Mom's another year younger ;)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!!!!

Saying Our Goodbyes

The girls were devastated Saturday evening when they realized it was going to be the last time they would get to get to see Rachel and the twins for a while. The girls and I stopped by for a really quick visit Sunday night. We turned on Babes in Toyland, but I don't know how much of it they actually watched. It was fun spending time with Lairen, Rachel and the babies. We are grateful for each moment we spent together. We'll miss you all (that includes you Leif) and look forward to the next time. It always nice when family comes back into town.

Ally's Baptism

What an incredible day! Ally has been so excited to enter the waters of baptism and follow her Savior, Jesus Christ. Her special day was filled with smiles and a few tears when the day was over. She truely feels the love of the Savior and is certainly letting her light shine. Our family is so blessed to witness this special day. Ally, we are pleased with your decision and hope you always feel the peace and comfort you felt on this special day.

Many of our friends and family members came and showed their support. We didn't get near the pictures we would have liked and I'm so sad that the pictures we did get, didn't turn out very clear. A family dinner took place following the baptism. We were thrilled Great Grandma Jeanne and Great Grandpa Paul came. Aunt Rachel and the twins were able to be here along with the rest of Jeremy's local family members and my parents. We missed the rest of you dearly, but know you would have been here if you could. Thank you for showing your support in other ways...you are wonderful and we miss you!!!

Ally is such a special girl. She knows she is loved by many. All of us know it is because of her sweet disposition and the love she shows to others. Thank you to everyone who has shown their support. You helped make this a special day for all of us.

Ally has a special primary song we've been singing for the last several months. It is her favorite, I thought would be appropriate to share. It is titled:

Baptism
Jesus came to John the Baptist, In Judea long ago,
And was baptized by immersion, In the River Jordon’s flow.

“To Fulfill the law”, said Jesus, When the Baptist questioned why,
“And to enter with my Father, In the Kingdom upon high”

Now we know that we must also, Witness faith in Jesus’ word
Be baptized to show obedience, As was Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Fall Leaves

Beautiful sunshine most of the week, created a beautiful vision in our yard...crisp leaves and a giant pile to jump in! We had fun and got a great picture of Kaitlyn during her unexpected and much desired photo-shoot. This one's for you mom, from Kaitlyn.

Jeremy and I estimate; if we raked leaves, we would have about 200 piles this size throughout the season. We are grateful for the lawn mower attachment that scoops them up for us :) Hooray for technology and Jeremy's dediation to get it done 2-3 times a week during this 3 week period. Thanks Babe!

Leif's Visit/Babies Blessing

Leif came in for a short visit with the family. He's completed his out of town rotations and we were thrilled he was able to reunite with his family (he and Rachel were divided for 3 months...I can't imagine!). The twins were 6 lbs. when he left, he came back to them being double the weight and little Micah surpassing Savannah (complete rolls reversed!)

Don't the babies look SO precious???!!! The babies blessings were very sweet, Leif did a great job! It was a good day.

A night of Tricks and Treats

Friday was our big night to celebrate halloween and have our chance to trick/trunk or treat. BG had their businesses open for trick or treating and we were thrilled that Paige joined us for the speedy trick or treating jaunt down Main Street.

Once Jeremy was home from work we headed to his parents for their wards Harvest Festival, which included some trunk or treating. It was a great time being able to have most of the cousins together (Jade and Westin we missed you!!!). Becky & Steve came in from Boise. Everyone had a nice time together....especially the cousins :)
